What elevated Spacewar! above simple visual tricks was its rigorous mathematical foundation. The game features two spacecraft—the wedge-shaped "Needle" and the bulkier "Wedge"—locked in dogfight combat. Programmers implemented real Newtonian mechanics:
1. Inertia & Momentum: Ships accelerate forward when thrusters burn, retaining velocity vector momentum when coasting.
2. Central Gravitational Well: Dan Edwards added a central gravitational star ("The Star") that pulled both ships toward death unless thrusters were calculated dynamically.
3. Expensive Background Accuracy: Peter Samson programmed "Expensive Planetarium," rendering accurate star maps of the night sky complete with relative brightness adjustments.
Legacy & Direct Hardware Offshoots
Because DEC distributed Spacewar! diagnostic code with new PDP-1 units, the game spread to research centers across North America. A decade later, Stanford student Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney adapted the concept into discrete TTL hardware circuits, creating Computer Space (1971), the world's first commercial arcade machine, which directly led to the founding of Atari.
